The Masked Reader

The Masked Reader

The Great Wood team all donned masks to disguise their identity and read out the famous story of Peter Rabbit!

The children had a great time trying to unmask our readers and guess which member of staff was which character.  This was a fantastic way to celebrate World Book Week and every Great Wood child will be receiving a World Book Day voucher, to use as part payment for the next book that they purchase.

Thanks to Mrs Roberts for organising this fantastic event and thank you to our readers and to everyone for joining in.  Keep reading!!

Lots of Flipping Fun!

In school Mrs Bromley and Mrs Buckley kindly cooked pancakes for all our Key Worker children and our Great Wood team.  There were lots of second helpings and everyone really enjoyed their afternoon treat. As you can see from our photographs there were a lot of sticky faces!

Goodbye Captain Sir Tom

03/02/2021

Goodbye Captain Sir Tom

It was with sadness that we read of the passing of Captain Sir Tom Moore yesterday.

The World War II soldier, who rose to the public eye by walking 100 laps of his garden as he approached his 100th birthday, raised almost £33million for NHS charities and shone brightly with his message of determination and hope at a time when it was needed most.

Following his remarkable fund-raising achievement, and since reaching 100 years old, Tom went on to have many great experiences including a number one song with Michael Ball, and, at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award ceremony, winning the 'Helen Rollason Award' and having the 'Unsung Hero Award' named after him. He also received the honorary title of 'Colonel'.

He capped off a remarkable year by being knighted in a special investiture by Queen Elizabeth II and became Captain Sir Tom. The Queen led tributes to Captain Sir Tom yesterday, "recognising the inspiration he provided for the whole nation and others across the world".

Nowadays, the words 'legend' and 'inspiration' may be used a little freely, however, with Captain Sir Tom - they seem to fit well.

Captain Sir Tom was indeed a great source of inspiration and leaves a legacy of hope, encapsulated by his wise words, "Tomorrow will be a good day."

God bless you, Captain Sir Tom.

Christmas Music Concert

Christmas Music Concert

Sadly, our choir this year was unable to take part in the Christmas Concert at the Victoria Hall as we have done for many years, it is a firm favourite in the school year and for some; the start of the Christmas festivities. Luckily, we were invited to take part in an online version in which the schools sang in their own bubbles and through the wonder of technology would form an online Mass Choir. I have attached a link for you to enjoy the concert and sing-along with some Christmas classics. I would like to thank Mr. Chapman and Mrs. Lamb in their support and patience in making it all happen. Of course, the pupils steal the show and shine brightly in their performance, please enjoy!

‘Impacts of the World Wars’ on British society

In Year Six this half term, the children have been learning about the ‘Impacts of the World Wars’ on British society. They have used their historical knowledge of the wars and merged this with their RE and Art studies to produce some magnificent candle designs to symbolise the end of the war - as Britain came out of the darkness into the light. The children created candles, using henna cones filled with acrylic paint, which were inspired by the designs they saw having visited the amazing car-van on site and to celebrate the contribution of the Indian sub continent in the war effort. As you can see they thoroughly enjoyed this whole experience and the final creations were extremely impressive. Well done Year 6, excellent work!
