Our Eco Council Have Been Busy!

The children on our Eco Council have been down to the village to plant crab apple and hazelnut trees at our Well Meadow Gardens, next to the village car park and river.  The trees have been planted as part of a national tree planting campaign, to sustain our trees and woodlands.  Our children were invited to take part by councilor Stephanie Akerman.  They has a brilliant time giving back to our community and helping the environment.  Well done, Great Wood Eco Council!

Children’s Mental Health Week 2020

Last week, we marked ‘Children’s Mental Health Week 2020’.  Pupils in year 5/6 spent time learning about coping with anxiety and talking about top tips to cope with it.  Pupils said: “I have learnt a lot from Mental Health week, like when you have a worry don’t hold it inside, tell somebody” Jess Rushton, age 11. “It’s ok to talk about your worries. Do things to take your mind off your worries like go for a jog, take deep breaths and exercise” Summer McAlpine, age 11. “If you have anxiety, make sure you don’t keep it in, you should talk about it with a friend or trusted adult” Leo Harris, age 10. For further information about ‘Children’s Mental Health Week’, please visit: www.childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk

Reception Become Woodland Royalty

Our reception once again, enjoyed another muddy morning in our woodland walk.  Today they retold the story of Goldilocks and the three bears, by finding hidden story cards and made their very own nature crowns.  As you can see from the photographs they had a fabulous time and enjoyed modelling their creations!

Down In The Woods

Our reception children embraced the cold and ventured down to our woodland area.  They learnt about nature, enjoyed a role play story, played games and even built their own dwellings, from mud and sticks – there was a lot of hand washing when they returned to the classroom, having had an amazing woodland adventure.

Year 5 Take To Their Wheels

Year five had a fabulous time learning about keeping themselves safe while out and about on their bikes. Through the guidance from their brilliant instructor, Alan, all those that took part passed their Level 2.  Bikeability is an important part of our curriculum and ensures that pupils are more aware and safe as they travel around the local community. Despite the wet and chilly weather the pupils smiled and behaved implacably throughout the two days - well done everyone.

Year Six are spending this half term working with our brilliant local PCSO’s as part of the Junior Cadet scheme. The pupils get to experience a variety of different topics that increase awareness of themselves when out in public and the important role that the police play. Look out for them on patrol when checking the parking during the school run.

On Tuesday 17th December our spectacular choir headed to Morrisons to entertain shoppers, with their festive signing.  People took time to pause from their busy days to listen our fabulous choir.  The children raised just under £100 with their performance!  Well done Great Wood, you did us proud!
