Pupils Experience Theatre In The Round

KS2 pupils were wowed at the production of The Prince and the Pauper at the New Vic Theatre. This year the spectacle was amazing and everyone was in agreement that it was one of the best we have seen. The pupils loved the interaction and engagement that theatre in the round brings. The pupils were a pleasure to take out and they enjoyed the interval treats provided by our generous PTFA, this included the cost of the coach. A brilliant afternoon in all.

Community Carol Service

Great Wood pupils combined with their friends from St. Thomas’s to form a massed choir at the Christmas Carol Service held at Great Wood Hall on Sunday 15th December. The local community turned out to celebrate and recognise the importance of the Christmas story. It was a lovely Sunday afternoon that increased the festivities and excitement as we prepare for the end of term.

Festive Cheer And Full Tummies!

The school community came together to celebrate Christmas with a fantastic Christmas lunch, wonderfully prepared by our amazing cooks, Lesley and Jan. Guests from across the local community were joined by others who had helped in school as volunteers. The school team enjoyed tucking into lunch, including the Brussel sprouts, with their classes as the festive fun continued. Everyone enjoyed the chance to put on their paper cracker hats and wish each other a Merry Christmas. Thanks to all involved for a lovely afternoon.

Children Go On A North Pole Adventure

Our Reception and KS1 children were lucky enough to visit the National Forest Adventure Farms on Wednesday 11th December.  The children travelled to the North Pole through a magical portal. Helped the elves sort parcels, met the talking polar bear, sang Christmas songs with the singing reindeer and met Father Christmas before choosing their very own gift from Santa’s workshop. Children also enjoying a tractor ride, seeing all the animals, joining in the nativity. They had a fantastic time!

Young And Old Enjoy Christmas Together

As is Great Wood tradition, our Reception and KS1 performed our Nativity the Inn-Spector’s for the British Legion.  We, as a school, are closely affiliated with the British Legion and they all thoroughly enjoyed the show.  They were then served a delicious Christmas Lunch, cooked by our amazing Lesley and Jan.

Lighting The Way To Christmas!

Parents of our KS2 children were invited into school to prepare for the Tean Light Switch on. Working together they constructed a lantern to hold as part of the Procession of Lights, beautifully designed by Mrs. Furnival. It was very well attended and it was great to see so many people using their creative skills. The light switch on was a success with pupils taking part in readings, singing and even turning the lights on. It’s beginning a lot to feel like Christmas.

Small Schools Athletic

Our Y5/6 athletes took part in an indoor athletics event and came a very respectful 2nd out of 10 schools. They won the majority of their races and worked well as a team in all the relay events. This is all good preparation for the Athletics event at Northwood next year where I expect to see these pupils winning again. Well done to everyone involved, you can be very proud of yourselves.

Following In The Footsteps Of Greatness

The Y5/6 football team had a brilliant afternoon when taking part in the Small Schools County Football competition organised by Staffordshire FA. As you can see it was all smiles as they entered the David Beckham 4G pitches. They played very well and our striker managed to score an absolute screamer of a goal. What a wonderful opportunity to play at the home of English Football. Well done to all involved and thank you to all our parents, who came to support.

A Festive Thank You From Great Wood

The Poppy Party was celebrated in fine style this year and was well attended by the Royal British Legion and members of the local community. Pupils led the Remembrance Service at the beginning of the evening; most were dressed in school uniform, however some came in Brownie/Cubs/Guides uniform. During the presentation the school were thanked for their fundraising with a superb total of £430. The pupils enjoyed the buffet and then entertained the guests with songs from the 1930’s/40’s followed by some poetry that they had written in class, with it all culminating with a few Christmas classics to finish the evening off. The guests commented on how “fabulous” our pupils are and that they are “a credit to the school”. We look forward to welcoming the RBL back for Christmas Dinner and Nativity Performance on December 5th.
